CONFIRMED: Minutes of the September 15-16 meeting, released October 7,2 show all 19 policymakers backed the September hike and most judge another appropriate before year-end,3 while one reading of the same minutes says the next increase can wait until December4 and another finds no appetite for a series of hikes.5 Futures price an October 28 hold at 82.8%.6 ESCALATED: The Treasury's $39 billion 10-year reopening priced at 5.300%, the highest since November 2000, with foreign indirect bidders taking 80.3%,7 and primary dealers absorbed a record-low 2.5%.8 The 10-year had spiked to 5.36%, its highest since 2002, before the sale pulled it back to 5.282%,8 and the 30-year reached 5.732%, its highest since May 2002.9 Demand showed up; the price was the concession.
ESCALATED: AI chip debt is bidding for the same capital: Oracle, Broadcom and SpaceX are negotiating packages with lenders including Apollo, Blackstone and Goldman Sachs,10 and SpaceX credit default swaps hit a record over a proposed $40 billion chip-collateralized borrowing.11,12 Broadcom's piece is reported at more than $50 billion in a single-source account [T3],13 and at $30 billion,14 a spread no filing has settled. The demand underneath is real: TSMC booked September revenue of NT$511.86 billion.15 Its buyers now finance it on a curve at 2002 highs, a pressure the minutes name.3 Households pay last: the 30-year mortgage was quoted at 7.28%,16 at 7.49% for the week ended October 217 and at 7.63%18 across three different series, and one-year inflation expectations rose to 3.9%, the highest since May 2023.19
ESCALATED: The Pentagon instructed Central Command to finalize preparations for potential major combat operations in Iran,20 and the president said he no longer seeks a deal.21 Strait of Hormuz transits fell to their lowest in over two months22 as tanker attacks hit their highest weekly level of the war,23 and Brent topped $105 on a 5% gain this morning.24 The strongest counter-evidence runs the other way. Tehran says its answer to US proposals will travel through mediators after progress with Oman on safe-shipping corridors [T3],25 Qatar says message exchanges continue [T3],26 and Gulf crude exports recovered to about 16.5 million barrels a day in September, with 60% crossing Hormuz against 83% before the war [T3].27 "No deal" and an open mediator channel are both on the record; the tape prices only the first.
ESCALATED: A Congressional Research Service report counts at least 81 US aircraft lost or damaged, nearly double May estimates, including 12 F-15E Strike Eagles and 45 MQ-9 Reapers,28 even as the Pentagon buys capacity at the low end with another 1,320 strike drones from a Ukrainian maker.29 ESCALATED: Households are already paying: federal outlook data put winter heating-oil bills up 21%,30 though cheaper natural gas and propane lower costs for homes on those fuels,31 and Illinois declared all 102 counties disaster areas and let farmers run dyed diesel on state roads [T3].32 Three tests follow: jobless claims today,33 September CPI on October 14 and the FOMC on October 28.
