CONFIRMED: Yesterday's thesis held that the long end prices the war and the deficit on its own schedule — the 10-year eased to 5.27% while stocks climbed to a record,1 then the Treasury's $58 billion three-year auction stopped at a high yield of 4.932% with indirect buyers at 57.59%, the lowest since February.2
The S&P 500 closed at a record 7,819.04,3 its first record since mid-August, on reduced Federal Reserve rate-hike bets.4 The leadership is narrow: only about 25% of S&P 500 stocks trade above their 50-day moving averages, ten mega-caps carry 41% of the index's weight, and Nvidia closed at a $5.8 trillion valuation.5 ESCALATED: The money behind that leadership is now borrowed at sovereign scale: SpaceX is in talks to borrow about $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips in a round reported as led by Apollo Global Management,6 after Broadcom's effort to secure $60 billion for the same purpose.7 The market did not applaud every leg of it — SpaceX shares fell 2.2% on the financing reports.8
The Treasury market declined the equity tape's optimism. Yields climbed again early Wednesday ahead of a 10-year note auction and the FOMC minutes,9 and the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 7.28%.10 IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva described a world caught between an energy shock and an AI boom,11 and urged major economies to tighten budgets with global debt-to-GDP near 100%.12 The two trades share owners: hedge fund assets doubled to nearly $13 trillion since 2020, $7.7 trillion of it borrowed, and their share of the Treasury market rose to 9% from 4% in 2022.5 CONFIRMED: Futures kept fading an October hike, the prior call, even as San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly backed September's increase and warned that an AI-driven chip squeeze could outlast ordinary supply shocks and keep inflation up.13 That is the unresolved tension: equities price AI as profit, while one Fed official prices the same AI as inflation.
ESCALATED: Nearly 20 commercial ships and tankers were attacked around the Strait of Hormuz over the past month,14 and Brent crossed $100 again Wednesday after Houthi strikes on Saudi airports15 that injured three people.16 The strongest counter-reading is single-source: Gulf exports recovered to about 16.5 million barrels a day in September, near pre-war levels, but only 60% of those barrels crossed Hormuz against 83% before the war [T3].17 ESCALATED: The bill is landing in the heating season: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey declared an energy emergency with heating oil above $6 a gallon, nearly 75% higher than a year earlier,18 and NEADA estimates oil-heat households could pay about 50% more this winter.19 The EIA's own projection cuts the other way for households heating with natural gas or propane, which it expects to spend less.20
Washington's answer is to lower what households pay at the pump rather than add barrels: an order extends tax-free red-dyed diesel,21 the President says he is weighing suspension of the 18.4-cent federal gasoline tax with pump prices averaging $4.36,22 and he has pledged $90 to Medicare seniors.23 The shortage pays refiners: Shell put third-quarter refining margins at $42 a barrel against $24 in the second quarter,24 and Chevron's chief executive called a diesel export ban unwise.25
The calendar decides which reading wins: the FOMC minutes at 2 p.m. ET today,26 JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs earnings October 13,27,28 September CPI October 14 and the FOMC October 28,29 with an IEA decision on the G7 diesel and oil stocks release due October 14-15.30 Lenders to the AI build-out and refiners are paid in either outcome; households carrying 7.28% mortgages and $6 heating oil are paid in neither. The event that would show the bond market backing down is a 10-year close below 4.75% before October 28.
AI kill-switch statutory authority leaves the watch — resolved into Section 4.
