CONFIRMED: Yesterday this brief's thesis held that the inflation the Fed is tightening against is a war-supply shock rather than demand — today the UN food price index printed 133.3, its highest reading since 2022,1 and gasoline set a Labor Day record.2
ESCALATED: The Iran war stopped being a freight-rate story on Saturday. After the IRGC fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships, Central Command permanently disabled the crude carriers M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1 and destroyed the M/T Kylo under a tanker-for-tanker policy a US official confirmed the president had approved.4 The strikes landed on the export chain itself: Kharg Island's deepwater terminal handles approximately 90% of Iran's crude exports.5 The three vessels were reported at three different outcomes across the day; CENTCOM's own account settles it, stating the Kylo subsequently sank in the Gulf of Oman, which is also what Iranian state media claimed first.6 Tehran answered by claiming a hit on an unmanned US vessel in the Strait,7 and by promising faster and heavier retaliation while conceding the war's mounting economic toll.8
The official narrative cannot explain what Washington did with the two hardest questions that escalation raises. ESCALATED: On the first — whether the US has the interceptors to keep fighting — Pentagon investigators spent August administering polygraphs to roughly 50 Joint Staff members and senior officials to trace who told reporters that Patriot, THAAD and Tomahawk stocks were drawn down.9 That is an answer about the leak, not about the inventory, and it arrived alongside Army Secretary Dan Driscoll's resignation and the naming of Adam Telle as acting secretary, bringing senior military departures under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to at least 20.10 ESCALATED: On the second — what to do about the inflation the war is generating — the administration spent the weekend working to head off a rate hike ten days before the FOMC decides.11 It is pushing on an open door: CME futures now put the September 16 hike at 49.4% against 50.6% for a hold, down from the 58% this brief carried into the weekend,12 and Citi has pushed its rate-cut call all the way out to June 2027.13 Neither response touches a supply shock, and the electorate has already noticed: Republican consumer sentiment has fallen 15.1 index points since February to 82.14
Two dated marks sit inside the next ten days, and both test claims this brief has been tracking. CONFIRMED: Monday, September 8 is the mark on the China-exemption thesis, and the week's designations went to a Turkey-based bank and two Istanbul subsidiaries accused of moving tens of millions for the IRGC Quds Force and converting China-routed oil revenue into cash and gold — not to any top-tier Chinese state bank.15 US banks remain the acknowledged weak link in the clearing chain the campaign is supposed to close.16 Tuesday, September 16 is the FOMC. What lands on households in between is already priced into physical goods rather than into any index: the AAA national average reached $4.15 a gallon on Saturday against the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 set in 2012 [T3, single-source],3 after Friday's tape carried gasoline above $4.14, diesel at $5.85 and a 30-year mortgage at 6.71%, a 14-month high.18 CONFIRMED: The offset Washington keeps advertising remains years away, with the Venezuela concession producing no near-term barrels and its executed lease terms still unpublished.19
