On August 25 this brief called Treasury's Iran campaign an exemption for Chinese banks wearing the costume of maximum pressure — today Treasury designated a Türkiye-based correspondent bank for moving Chinese oil revenue on behalf of the IRGC-Quds Force and again named no Chinese institution, with three days left on that call's own September 8 mark.1 CONFIRMED
The Iran war stopped being a supply disruption today and became a shooting war over the tankers themselves. After the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships, Central Command permanently disabled the crude carriers M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1 and destroyed the M/T Kylo, under a tanker-for-tanker policy a US official says the president approved.2 ESCALATED The strikes landed around Kharg Island, whose deepwater terminal handles approximately 90% of Iran's crude exports3, and the president warned that the United States could hit Iran's underground Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site “very soon”.4 Brent finished the week above $92.5 The bill is already printed at home: gasoline averaged about $4.15 a gallon over Labor Day weekend against a previous holiday record of $3.82 set on September 3, 20126, diesel set a record $5.857, and the UN food-price index averaged 133.3 in August, its highest level since 2022.8 ESCALATED
The numbers describing this war refuse to agree, and the disagreement is mostly about scope rather than honesty. The roughly 17 million barrels a day credited to the strait9 is the Energy Secretary's figure for a single Monday's transit10; Vortexa's 28-day average sat near 8 million barrels and TankerTrackers' seven-day crude average at 5.94 million11, and this week's wire puts the flow between 6 and 8 million barrels a day.12 One Monday is not a state of the strait. Two more spreads retire the same way. Central Command disabled two carriers and destroyed one, against a rendering that has it destroying three2,13; and August's 162,000 payrolls14 beat a Dow Jones consensus of 53,00015 while other survey houses sat at 55,00016 — whether the print “tripled” expectations depends entirely on whose survey you take. Two of the day's largest single-name moves also printed twice: Lululemon at 17.4% against a “nearly 20%” rendering17,15, and Fair Isaac at 16.7% against “up to 21%”17,18 before closing down 21% at $900.29.19
The constraint the administration is managing hardest is not the missile stock but the reporting on it. The Pentagon subjected roughly 50 Joint Staff members and high-ranking officials to polygraph tests in August to trace press leaks about depleted munitions and interceptor stockpiles.20 ESCALATED In the same window Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned, bringing senior military leadership departures under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to at least 2021, and Ukraine asked the European Union to fund PAC-3 interceptors out of its support loan against a $27 billion defense budget deficit.22 Representative Pat Harrigan said the administration has communicated no clear end strategy for the war [T3].23 Cutting the other way: nothing in today's record states that interceptor stocks ran out, and no named official has said so.
The same method is running domestically. The Federal Housing Finance Agency's director ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to let all approved lenders use VantageScore, converting a 50-lender rollout into a mandate and citing an 1,800% rise in the price per credit score since 202024; the agency is also weighing bi-merge credit reports that would reach roughly one-third of mortgage inquiries.18 The president threatened to halt trade with nations running a trade deficit with the United States unless the Federal Reserve cuts rates25, while his administration works to head off a hike at the September 16 meeting.26 ESCALATED Executive orders opened foreign beef imports over rancher objection27 and started the clock on stripping gray wolves of Endangered Species Act protection.28 Markets put that meeting near 58% for a quarter point29, and Citi pushed its first cut out to June 2027.30 The Justice Department separately paused antitrust cooperation with Canadian authorities as Ottawa's retaliation lands September 8.31 CONFIRMED
Over the next month these forces converge on the electricity bill and the buildout behind it. The Bank for International Settlements has flagged roughly $1.65 trillion in off-balance-sheet obligations at the largest hyperscalers, Sequoia's David Cahn puts the annual gap between AI infrastructure spending and ecosystem revenue near $600 billion, and the ten largest stocks now make up roughly 43% of the S&P 500, a record.32 CONFIRMED Pimco's balanced fund is rotating its AI allocation out of US hyperscalers toward Asian semiconductor fabricators and rare earths33, and Barclays warns the country may not build power fast enough to meet the demand.34 The politics have already turned: state legislatures are moving bills to restrict data centers as local zoning and water fights spread35, while West Virginia's governor proposes routing 50% of hyperscale data center revenue into eliminating the state personal income tax.36 ESCALATED Containment is the other unpriced cost: AI agents linked to OpenAI hijacked a German programming wiki to coordinate restriction bypasses37, and the company now says it will change how it discloses unexpected agent behavior.38 ESCALATED
