RESOLVED: Yesterday this brief called the Strait's clearance contested on the strength of an Iranian claim that a supertanker had struck two mines — today CENTCOM stated on the record that the claim is false, which overturns that call; the danger in the Strait is real, but it arrived by projectile, not by mine.1
U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island to stop a fresh mine deployment, and Iran answered with ballistic missiles and drones against American bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.2 Brent settled up more than 2.5% at $90.52, and by Tuesday morning two supertankers carrying Saudi crude had been hit by projectiles inside the Strait, with a single outlet putting Brent above $92 and diesel crack spreads past $100 [T3].3,4,5 The move went straight into the curve: the U.S. ESCALATED: 10-year yield reached its highest level since January 2025, Japan's 10-year touched 3% for the first time since 1996, Britain's 30-year gilt hit 5.88%, eurozone inflation climbed back above 3%, and the yen slid toward 160 as Washington pressed Tokyo toward rate hikes of its own.6,7,8,9,10,13ESCALATED: Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole turn did the rest: CME FedWatch put the odds of a September hike at 66.1% on Monday, against 35% on August 27 and about 60% immediately after the speech, so the roughly 70% figure circulating in newsletter coverage is the outlier and 66.1% is the reading of the day.8,11,12
The official story is a geopolitical risk premium; what it does not explain is that Washington cannot resupply the fight it is running. ESCALATED: The Department of War signed seven-year framework agreements with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin to triple PAC-3 and quadruple THAAD interceptor production, after roughly 65% of Patriot and 38% of THAAD inventories were consumed in six months of this campaign.14,15 The Army Secretary resigned over blocked modernization and friction with the Defense Secretary, leaving the largest service without Senate-confirmed civilian leadership, and the Pentagon pushed back hard on reporting that combatant commanders had warned against extending Iran operations into 2027 — the formal non-concurrence detail rests on one outlet [T3].16,17,18 The numbers around all of it refuse to hold still: the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was reported at 286.8 million barrels in one newsletter and at 286.6 million after a 3.1 million barrel draw in two others, and the lower figure is the correct one — the reserve sits at its lowest level since November 1982.3,19,20
The announced offset is paper. CONFIRMED: The White House released terms granting a single company 100-year concessions across 17 Venezuelan fields holding 65 billion barrels, which settles the reserve figure this brief has carried as disputed for two cycles.21 What the release did not settle is what the United States actually receives: one account describes Washington purchasing 80% of the output, another describes a 35% equity stake plus 20% of after-tax oil at production cost.8,22 Neither version produces a barrel this year, because the crude is heavy, the infrastructure is degraded and restoring output is described as taking more than a decade, which is why the near-term policy is a meeting with refiners about capacity rather than a supply plan.8,23
The next six weeks are already dated. Friday's nonfarm payrolls lead into the September 15-16 FOMC, $9.6 trillion of U.S. options expire between now and September 18, Canada's retaliation against 50% Section 338 tariffs on roughly $20 billion of goods lands September 8, and the ECB is expected to raise next week.24,25,26,27 Beneath the calendar the plumbing is already strained: one interval fund opened a three-week auction to clear 15 consecutive quarters of redemption prorations, and the Financial Stability Board used the G20 to warn finance ministers about leverage, private credit and frontier AI in a single letter.28,29 The parties paid by this arrangement are identifiable: defense primes on a seven-year restocking cycle, refiners collecting exemptions, and the intermediaries structuring a concession whose terms are published two different ways. The party paying is the household absorbing a war premium through fuel, credit and food, and none of that is on any ballot in November.
