CONFIRMED: Yesterday this brief put the war premium in the Treasury curve rather than in the oil price — today the curve retreated from multiyear highs on a weak private-payrolls print rather than on any de-escalation, while benchmark diesel set an all-time high in the same session, which is the mechanism holding rather than breaking.1,2
Private payrolls rose 38,000 in August, the smallest gain since January and short of the 47,000 expected; a same-session account put the number at 37,000, but the ADP release itself is the instrument and it reads 38,000.3,4,5 Treasury yields fell across the curve and European government yields retreated from multiyear highs.1,6 The yen rose more than 1.7% to a one-month high on Bank of Japan tightening bets, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Japanese authorities would act in a way that leads to a stronger yen.7,8 September hike odds did not settle with the yields: CME FedWatch put them at 64% while other desks quoted close to 66% the same morning, and the market spent the day buying a weakening labor market as if it were peace.9,10
The war it was not pricing got louder. ESCALATED: US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island and Kuwait's military spent the morning engaging incoming Iranian missiles and drones.11,12 On the water, two accounts of the same strait ran side by side: the Energy Secretary called Monday a wartime record of more than 17 million barrels through Hormuz and ISW assessed transit near pre-war levels, while Qatar and the UAE resorted to rare ship-to-ship transfers outside the strait and European gas hit its highest since 2023.13,14,15 They reconcile: maritime analytics firm Kpler puts average flow at 8.6 million barrels a day once dark transits and those same ship-to-ship transfers are counted, which makes the 17-million-barrel Monday a single-session record sitting above the run rate rather than proof the chokepoint reopened [T3, single-source].16 ESCALATED: Meanwhile benchmark diesel futures set an all-time high of $4.73 a gallon with the nationwide retail average reported at $5.69 [T3, single-source], the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index posted a 13.5% August gain that was its largest monthly move since July 2012, and employer health benefit costs are projected to rise 8.2% in 2027, the sharpest jump in more than two decades.2,17,18,19
The offset on offer produces nothing soon, and the war it is supposed to offset has no end date. Energy Secretary Chris Wright oversaw the signing of tens of billions of dollars of Venezuelan energy agreements in Caracas with Chevron, ENI and GE Vernova, on terms that include a 100-year lease and a 35% federal equity stake carrying veto power over board appointments, and the plan is not expected to move US pump prices quickly.20,21,22 ESCALATED: The Pentagon is extending troop and warship deployments into 2027 while Republican senators complain publicly about senior Pentagon staff turnover and the absence of an Iran strategy behind it.23,24 The calendar into the September 15-16 FOMC is short: Canadian retaliatory tariffs take effect September 8, the same date this brief has been holding for a first top-tier Chinese bank designation that has still not come.25
The distribution is the part the relief rally does not touch. US corporate profits reached an all-time high in the second quarter while the worker share of national income fell to 60.2%, its lowest reading since 1951.26 That is the mechanism underneath every figure above: the financing side of the war and the AI buildout got its relief today from a labor market that is cooling, and the households absorbing diesel, grain and benefits inflation got the bill.
