CONFIRMED: Yesterday this brief's thesis was that the Pentagon was investigating who disclosed its depleted interceptor stocks rather than answering for them — today the Army awarded a $464.8 million contract for a laser air-defense system whose stated purpose is preserving those same stocks, and still named no inventory level.1
ESCALATED: Iran is preparing to declare a restricted maritime zone outside the Strait of Hormuz and sanction vessels that enter it, and commercial traffic through the strait has fallen to its lowest level since May.2 Brent topped $97 a barrel in early European trading after the weekend exchange of strikes.3 CONFIRMED: the premium is no longer landing in the crude price so much as in the household budget — diesel set an all-time record at $5.90 a gallon, and the war's bill to US consumers is put at $100 billion in higher energy prices, more than $760 per household since it began on February 28.4 The Labor Day gasoline average was $4.15 nationally and $5.83 in California, and the Jones Act waiver holding those numbers down runs only to November 15.5
The day's two loudest numbers both failed verification, and the second one is the one that touches the reader's money. Iranian state media said the Revolutionary Guard struck a remotely-operated US vessel in the strait; the US denied it,6 and a CENTCOM spokesman, Capt. Tim Hawkins, called the claim a total lie.7 CONFIRMED: one report Monday morning put September rate-hike odds at 58% on the strength of Friday's payroll beat,8 while a second from the same outlet the same morning said the jobs report had not materially moved them.9 The futures tool itself resolves it at 49.4% for a hike against 50.6% for a hold,10 the retracement of a reading that stood at 66% on August 31;11 this brief adopts 49.4% and treats the 58% as Friday's print carried into Monday's copy.
Two deadlines land tomorrow. Canadian counter-tariffs on more than 700 US products take effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8,12 days after the president called the US-Canada currency imbalance unacceptable,13 and September 8 is also the mark this brief has held for a top-tier Chinese state bank designation that none of this brief's sources report. The rest of the month is dense: PPI on September 10 and CPI on September 11,14 a CLARITY Act floor vote on September 15,15 the FOMC on September 15-16,16 Nike's exit from the S&P 100 on September 21,17 and the private-credit Q3 redemption window closing September 30.18 Underneath the calendar the financing strain compounds: Oracle carries a $129.5 billion debt load and an S&P downgrade against a $638 billion backlog,19 Chevron committed more than $7 billion to Venezuela over five years for barrels that arrive later,20 and the land grab for data centers is now producing local confrontations rather than local subsidies.21
