Yesterday's call to stay out of CoreWeave equity and bonds as one credit trade held: its shares fell 27.5% to a 52-week low before a 17% rebound,1 and its bond yields and default-swap spreads surged in the same session.2
ESCALATED: The AI build is now being priced by its lenders rather than its customers. CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread pushed past 1,000 basis points to a record on October 15,3 one of its bond issues fell to 83.35 cents on the dollar at a 14.58% yield to maturity,4 and its 2032 notes traded near 76 cents [T3].5 Anthropic has reportedly offered Blackstone a double-digit yield to finance chips.6 The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell an eighth straight session, erasing $2 trillion,7 and sits in a 23% drawdown after dropping more than 10% this week.8 The Nasdaq lost 4.5% on the week, its worst since late June.9 The money went to Treasuries: yields fell for the week as AI-debt jitters drove traders into haven bonds,10 with the 10-year dipping below 5.1%.11 JPMorgan and Cantor Fitzgerald counter that CoreWeave's selloff is overdone.12
The official framing is an "AI burnout trade."4 The tape says something narrower. S&P 500 stocks outside AI posted their second-largest weekly outperformance since 2024,13 and consumer staples rose 5% on the week.11 That is a credit repricing inside one sector: the build is financed, and the financing broke. AWS chief financial officer John Felton says server investments pay back in under three years, against Gartner's $3.5 trillion impairment warning.14 Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says used H100 chips have gained value, while Amazon cut some servers' useful life from six years to five [T3].15 Even the week's size is reported two ways: the Nasdaq's worst week since late June,9 or, in a mid-session account, its largest weekly decline in over a year.16
ESCALATED: Iran is supplying targeting and intelligence to Houthi forces for their attacks on Saudi Arabia,17 and Brent reached $110 for the first time since May.18 CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper says the blockade has cost Iran $25 billion in oil revenue,19 and the command maintains no vessel has evaded it.20 Yet Iran has kept shipping LPG and jet fuel,21 about 4.1 million barrels since mid-July through ship-to-ship transfers off Oman, roughly 2% of January's export volume.20 Both hold: the blockade leaks, but not enough to matter. A supertanker carrying more than two million barrels caught fire in the Strait, after striking a naval mine in one state-owned account [T3],22 after trying to cross a restricted area in another [T3].23
CONFIRMED: The war's bill lands on the same bond market: fiscal 2026 closed with a $2 trillion deficit and a record $1.360 trillion in interest,24 and the Congressional Budget Office projects debt-to-GDP will pass the post-World War II record of 106%.25 ESCALATED: The executive order implementing the Graham Act waives the duties its sections 112 and 113 impose along with certain sanctions, while the same text states a 500 percent ad valorem duty increase on Russian goods.26 Russia resumed global diesel exports,27 and Representative Gregory Meeks introduced a bipartisan bill with 17 co-sponsors to block the diesel deal.28 Relief by waiver is reversible by the same pen. CONFIRMED: Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh gave no rate guidance,29 investors pared October hike bets,30 and producer prices rose 1.3% in September [T3].31 Meta reports October 21 with Tesla also due,11 the FOMC decides October 28 with a hold quoted at 83% and 85% on October 16,32 and the Fed's productivity and jobs task force holds its first hearing November 16.33 Each date tests whether the AI build can be refinanced at these yields, with retail debt holders and fuel-paying households carrying a wrong answer.
