CONFIRMED: Yesterday this brief's thesis put three cost-push channels — Canadian counter-tariffs, a record diesel print and global yields pressing 5% — into a single US household budget; today that thesis holds, with Brent through $100,1 the trade fight escalating from duties to outright import bans, and the UK paying 5.82% on 30-year money, its highest since 1998.2
ESCALATED: US Central Command destroyed five Iranian crude carriers after two attempts in as many days to hit a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles,3 Iran's Revolutionary Guard answered with a missile salvo at a US base in Jordan, which Amman said caused no casualties,4 and with attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz;5 cutting the other way, airlines began gradually restoring Middle East services.6 Houthi drones and missiles struck Saudi sites at Abha, Najran and Jizan, wounding at least 73,7 and set a fire at the 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery.8 Two Iranian claims stay contested: Tehran says it struck two American vessels, and Washington denies any were hit;9 Tehran says it seized a US underwater drone, and CENTCOM's named spokesman says the vehicle was an older Anduril Dive-LD, dead in the water for over a day and carrying nothing classified.10 Brent crossed $100 a barrel,1 its first visit to triple digits since July 24,11 after trading near $98 in Tuesday's US session.12 The Dow closed 1.17% lower.13
The same morning the President signed proclamations barring Canadian dairy, alcoholic beverages and motor vehicles from the US market,14 effective September 29, with the 50% duty rate extending to further Canadian goods on September 15,15 and directed the General Services Administration to strip Canadian-origin products from a federal contracting schedule worth more than $50 billion a year.16 That lands on top of Canada's counter-tariffs of 15% to 50% on C$27.6 billion of American goods, about $20 billion USD, live since a minute past midnight the day before.17 Two governments are now removing each other's goods from the shelf rather than repricing them, and a ban does not respond to a negotiation the way a tariff does.
The official story is a premium that unwinds with the war: the President said oil prices will drop significantly once the conflict with Iran is won.18 Two facts in this brief's own sources say otherwise. Vitol's chief executive warned that refineries are running near capacity with little flexibility while US distillate inventories sit at their lowest seasonal level in at least 25 years,19 and the head of the Dangote refinery said fuel shortages will persist even after the war ends.20 A ceasefire restores barrels; it does not build a refinery. The second is readiness: Patriot interceptors are reported at roughly 36% of pre-Iran-war levels [single-source, undenied],21 and the Air Force has opened a solicitation, responses due October 9, for portable medium-caliber air-defense guns to shield overseas bases after Iranian strikes damaged five KC-135 tankers in Saudi Arabia.22 One reading points the other way and the payload never reconciles it: Sinopec projects Chinese oil demand falling 8.9% in 2026.23
ESCALATED: Anthropic researchers went public with warnings that advanced artificial intelligence could cause human extinction before the decade is out, one resigning and another conceding the company has no solved alignment plan for superintelligence,24 while OpenAI's chief scientist wrote that no lab has solved alignment and monitoring sufficiently and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rejected any regulatory pause, citing rivalry with China;25 cutting the other way, a federal court has already held the Pentagon's national-security blacklisting of Anthropic unlawful.26 In the same window the NSA, CISA and FBI accused six Chinese developers of industrial-scale knowledge distillation against Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok,27 and the Pentagon signed prototyping agreements worth up to $200 million each with four labs while asking OpenAI for a minimal-refusal model.28 The rivalry is the stated reason there is no statute; the absence of a statute is what leaves model access, safety thresholds and military deployment set by executive discretion alone.
The next three weeks price all of it. Producer prices print September 10 and August CPI on September 11, the two readings the decision now turns on.29 The FOMC decides September 16, with a hike quoted at 60% in Tuesday's pricing against 58.7% on Monday;30 a search for a fresher print returned nothing newer, so that band stands as Tuesday's number rather than today's [T3]. September 15 also brings the Senate's cloture vote on the CLARITY Act,31 which Senator Thom Tillis says will fail without White House help.32 Missouri's ballots must be finalized before September 19.33 The gains accrue to refiners, to defense primes on a multi-year restocking cycle, and to the incumbents locking semiconductor and fiber supply. The cost lands on the household: gasoline set a record Labor Day average of $4.15 a gallon,34 and July consumer credit rose $18.1 billion, pushing card balances to a record $1.357 trillion at an average 22.15% on accounts assessed interest.35
